March 2022

Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. Where roots grow deep in the winter, new leaves and branches appear as the days and nights lighten and warm. Like emerging from a dark, cold winter, it’s hard to believe that it’s been just two years since the COVID-19 pandemic began and changed all of our lives. As we move forward together into this new spring and hopefully finally out of the pandemic we bring with us grief for what we have lost and hope for the future.

Will Stauffer, Stephanie Zhang & Michelle Higgs door knocking in Columbus

For Hoosier Action, spring is a season of neighborhood outreach, relationship building, holding deep conversations and getting to know our neighbor, all to build robust communities both in person and online. There is excitement and energy in this season and in this work.  Like shoots of green along a country road, you don’t always know what will bloom, but once it does, it is truly beautiful and amazing.

HELP US TELL THE STORY OF THE 2022 LEGISLATIVE SESSION

This week, we dropped our 2-page document outlining what we did and what happened at the Statehouse this year! This year at the Statehouse we went all in for Indiana by joining together across race and place to demand the services and supports Hoosiers require, so that every Hoosier family, in good times and bad, can thrive.

Read it and share it by going to this link or share our social media friendly version on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Let’s face facts: the majority of us spend A LOT of our day on social media, and it’s often the first place we hear about breaking news, especially local news. That’s why we’re organizing our first ever social media training 3/31 at 7 pm ET!

We’re building real online community that translates to real offline action. Since the majority of our base and the people we speak with are on Facebook, we are launching a Facebook Group to actively engage one another in conversation and meaning making around the issues that matter to us. Whether it is discussing the latest local or state news or sharing the stories that restore our faith in humanity, we also know that social media is a primary source of fake information and trolling. We want to equip one another with the tools to engage in informed and powerful conversations both online and off.  If you’re on Facebook, join us by visiting https://www.facebook.com/groups/649707209475153/ .

Bartholomew County Chapter

Bartholomew County chapter members fought hard and won a housing task force during the legislative session. Check out an interview with member leader Randy Shelton and organizer Stephanie Zhang on Fox59:

Jackson County Chapter

We’re knocking on doors today in Jackson County to talk to our neighbors about their experiences of the overdose crisis and invite them to take action with us. Register here to join us in Seymour at 5 pm. We’ll provide a short training and then knock on doors in pairs.

Moms of Hoosier Action (MOHA) Chapter

MOHA is hosting their first hybrid in-person/online training session on April 10th for moms across the state! At this training, we’re bringing together urban and rural moms and caregivers to learn about how to build power across race and place. Register here to join MOHA in-person in Bloomington or online!

Morgan County Chapter

Hoosier Action’s Morgan County team met with President Pro Tempore Rod Bray of Indiana’s Senate to discuss local pollution and health issues in Martinsville and what legislation could improve the issue for the community.

Ohio River Valley Chapter

Hoosier Action leaders in Floyd, Clark, and Scott Counties, who make up the Ohio River Valley Chapter, have been coming together this month to strategize for the summer. We’ll be knocking on doors in April, and holding one-on-one conversations, especially with current and former drug users and previously incarcerated Hoosiers. Please contact Will Stauffer (will@hoosieraction.org) if you want to participate in their outreach efforts or have a story to share.
